Pet Dental Care

The condition of your pet's teeth is an important indicator of their overall health. Poor oral hygiene causes more than just bad breath, tooth loss, inflammation, and gum disease are prevalent in cats and dogs and these problems can significantly impact your pet's quality of life. At Premier Veterinary Care and Resort, we recommend a dental exam at least once a year to make sure your pet's oral cavity is clean and healthy.

Just like their owners, pets benefit greatly from consistent dental care. It's important to brush their teeth and gums regularly to remove plaque and tartar buildup especially as they grow older. Keep in mind that pets are experts at hiding pain. This is just part of their natural survival instinct, but poor oral hygiene can cause long-term health complications. For example, periodontal disease is a common problem in dogs and cats that if left unchecked can lead to bleeding, inflammation, and bone loss. It can even eventually contribute to heart disease.

Pet Dental Exams

A professional dental exam can quickly identify any hidden signs of gum disease or other issues. Here are a few things to look out for that could signify your pet is experiencing oral pain:

  • Bad breath

  • Loose or broken teeth

  • Changes in chewing/eating behavior

  • Swollen or bleeding gums

  • Drooling

  • Loss of appetite

A dental cleaning and exam from the Premier Veterinary Care and Resort team[Link to About Us page] includes:

  • An in-depth review of your pet's teeth, gums, tongue, palate, and throat to check for loose teeth, gum inflammation, or mouth sores.

  • A thorough cleaning and brushing of your pet's teeth and gums to remove plaque and tartar.

  • Anesthesia—Anesthesia ensures your pet doesn't experience any pain or discomfort during the dental cleaning procedure.

  • Ultrasonic scaling to fully clean the teeth and tooth polishing to create a surface more resistant to plaque.

Premier Veterinary Care and Resort also performs oral surgery including simple and complex tooth extractions.

Dental Radiographs

An important part of routine dental care for your pet is dental radiographs. Dental x-rays can help us detect any disease in your pet's mouth that might not be visible from the outside of the gums. Some forms of dental disease that can be discovered through dental x-rays can cause a lot of pain if left undetected and untreated. By including dental x-rays in your pet's yearly routine preventive care, we can ensure the best quality care for your pet.
